“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. This simple concept, shared with BBC students, faculty and staff recently, is at the heart of the ministry of Dr. Palmer Becker.  Palmer, a retired pastor from the Mennonite Church in Canada and long time friend of BBC, came for the fourth time to teach Pastoral Care and Counseling. This time his primary responsibility was teaching the course at a master’s level in BBC’s Gaza Study Centre. As expected, on his visit to Gaza Palmer witnessed the massive destruction that resulted from the hostilities this past July and August yet found that the spirit of the ten students in the class to study and learn was undaunted. The resource being used was a newly published book “Pastoral Care and Counseling” written by Palmer and translated into Arabic by BBC faculty member, Grace Al Zoughbi. It’s a step-by-step guide for students about how to care for those in their community who are suffering from grief, depression, trauma, abuse and conflict. Focusing on these needs was especially vital in Gaza. In addition, Palmer provided much needed encouragement and support to the Christian community in Gaza, which at only 1300 people is a tiny minority. While on the Bethlehem campus for three weeks, he assisted Rev. Alex Awad in Homiletics class and Dr. Jack Sara and Shireen Awwad in specialized seminars.
