Empowering Hope: Our Students Serving Syrian Refugees

In a world frequently shadowed by conflict and displacement, the Shepherd Society team, along with a group of our students, has once again taken proactive steps.

This past month, our students embarked on a journey of compassion and service, visiting Syrian refugees in Al-Mafraq, Jordan, and organizing a summer camp for the refugee children. Their initiative aimed to offer respite from the harsh realities of refugee life while fostering hope.

Here are some heartfelt reflections from our students:

Jeniely shared: “This time’s visit to Jordan was a different story, filled with the joy of the children and the world around them. We organized two summer camps for the children, which provided a unique and heartwarming experience. The children were thrilled to see us again, recalling all the activities we had shared in past years. While we usually saw them at the camp, this time, we visited their homes. Despite their significant concerns and the modest size of their houses, their joy and smiles remained unchanged.

“During a women-only trip for the refugees to Amman, I was struck by the simple pleasures that brought them joy. Laughter filled the air throughout the day, and everyone enjoyed every moment.

“Each day at the camp was different, marked by the children’s presence, enthusiasm, and hope, which filled us with happiness and renewed our commitment to making each day count. People often question why we persist in our efforts, but the children’s joy, innocence, hope, and beauty anchor us—to who we are and to Christ, who strengthens us and fills our lives with purpose and spirit.

“As the camp drew to a close, we witnessed the profound impact of our work and the positive changes that unfolded over the years, touching both children and adults alike. Faith grew stronger and clearer, moving some to tears at the sight of these transformations.”

Ayman added: “Some may question the value of such efforts, but as followers of Christ, we are called to be the salt and light in the world. Serving Syrian refugees in Al-Mafraq, our team shared biblical teachings, offered prayers, and comforted families experiencing hardship and displacement. Our service was not in vain; it brought meaningful change and hope to many lives needing support and compassion.”

Jumanna reflected: “Previously, I worked remotely preparing and setting up the handicrafts station and training volunteers to manage this artistic outlet. However, this summer, I personally engaged in this ministry with the team. It was an incredibly enriching experience, directly interacting with children and women and feeling the unity and familial spirit within our team. Though my participation lasted just a few days, it profoundly impacted me, leaving me wanting to repeat this experience next year. I extend my gratitude to everyone involved in this blessed endeavor.”

Lawrence remarked: “This was my first visit, and I had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful people. The summer camp was truly amazing; the children were incredibly fond of us, and their simplicity was heartwarming. The visits we made were exceptionally memorable. I was deeply moved by how eagerly the children awaited our annual visits, their heartfelt prayers in the name of Christ, and their impressive memorization of numerous verses and passages from the Bible. As much as I cherish my service there, I look forward to revisiting the church.”
