Transformative Encounters in the Summer Intensive Course in Peacemaking and Justice in the Palestinian Context

Despite the relentless flight cancellations, which have limited travel to Bethlehem through Jordan, thirteen participants joined our Summer Intensive course in Peacemaking and Justice in the Palestinian Context from May 18 to 30. The Intensive offers the opportunity to learn from important Palestinian Christian leaders, engage in interfaith discussions, and conduct field research, among other activities.

Alongside in-depth study and insights gained through outings, our participants encountered much of daily Palestinian life. Having tea in an outdoor shop on a back street in Bethlehem, learning to cook the delicious musakhan – roasted chicken and onions on flatbread – attending church with a Palestinian family, and walking through the countryside near Bethlehem all provided glimpses into the richness and beauty of Palestinian life and culture.

One of the most significant challenges for participants was realizing they were just an hour’s drive from the unknowable suffering in Gaza. This suffering, along with the intensifying hardships in the West Bank, added a sense of urgency and depth to their studies.

Lisa from California shared, “I am so grateful for the Summer Intensive at Bethlehem Bible College. It has been a transformative experience. Through this course, I’ve encountered extraordinary peacemakers, deeply felt the reality of Palestinian life and faith, and discovered both the message and the community I need to carry this work forward with hope, purpose, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”

Andrew Bush, the Educational Program Coordinator of the BIPJ, adds, “Through our semester-length online course and Summer Intensive, we have seen students make considerable advances in understanding the Palestinian community, its struggles, and heroic efforts to pursue justice and peace. We encourage all interested in learning more to join our fall course by registering here.”
