December 19, 2023Celebrating Christmas in Bethlehem
Haytham Dieck
Christmas is approaching and the year’s highlight in Bethlehem is Christmas. During this period the streets are decorated with lights and banners, churches are full of worshippers and visitors, and people run to shops to buy Christmas decorations. Different events would take place on this occasion: the annual Christmas Market, the Christmas tree lighting, and local artists, musicians, and choirs are scheduled to perform in Manger Square. However, a huge change is happening this year due to the war in Gaza. The town of Bethlehem is canceling Christmas celebrations to mourn the victims and innocent people in Gaza. The Christmas celebrations will be restricted to religious services, instead of the parades of Palestinian scouts through the town of Bethlehem to greet each Patriarch on his arrival from Jerusalem according to the Status Quo.
Jesus was born two thousand years ago, in challenging times and a humble place in a small cave. The magnificent Basilica of the Nativity was erected later over the cave. At that time, the good news appeared first to modest people, who were shepherds. Due to the inconvenient situation in the Holy Land today, if we are to celebrate Christmas, then prayer and hope are the keywords. Despite all the hours of darkness, a time of hope has to come. It is from the tiny seed that the change could happen. Therefore, let us be the tiny seed that brings faith and hope to the people.
